FEMALE INMATES GIVEN A VOICE IN WOMEN’S DAY ACTIVATION

Ligwalagwala FM marked Women’s Day in a powerful and inspiring way by hosting the Women Behind Bars activation at Middelburg Correctional Centre on Saturday, 09 August 2025. The event, which was accompanied by a live broadcast of the SMG Show, brought a spotlight on the lives, struggles, and hopes of female inmates.

The initiative was first launched in 2024 at Nelspruit Correctional Centre, after the station noted that female inmates are often overlooked during national holidays and social campaigns. This year’s continuation in Middelburg reaffirmed Ligwalagwala FM’s commitment to giving a voice to women behind bars and offering them a platform for reflection, healing, and motivation. During the live broadcast, female inmates shared their personal stories of crime, rehabilitation, and resilience, reminding listeners of the importance of making positive life choices. The program aimed not only to uplift and encourage inmates but also to educate women outside prison walls to stay away from crime.

The Women Behind Bars activation was graced by high profile dignitaries, including Mr. Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale; National Commissioner of Correctional Services; Mr. Lungile Nduvane, SABC Mpumalanga Regional Operations Manager and Mr. Nkosinathi Ntuli, Business Manager for MP Combo. Their presence emphasized the national importance of rehabilitation programs and the role of media in driving social impact.
