MEDIA STATEMENT

SABC AND CSA COMMEMORATE WORLD AIDS DAY AND THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Johannesburg-Friday, 29 November 2019-The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) have assumed an active role in support of 16 days of Activism against Gender-based violence as well as commemorating World Aids Day.

The SABC as an organisation that aims to be the voice of the nation together with CSA on Sunday, 01 December 2019 will unite in spreading a message for collective action.

The two parties have resolved that the MSL T20 global tournament will on Sunday be led by an all-female broadcast team at the Cape Town and Johannesburg based games. The Johannesburg match which starts at 9:30 will encourage viewers to pledge their support for #TheseHandsDoNotCommitGBV.

SABC Group Executive: Radio, Ms. Nada Wotshela stated that “the scourge of violence against women, and the most vulnerable people in our society, children, is something that SABC Radio commits to eradicating for good, by scheduling content that promotes awareness, supports the vulnerable, and holds our leaders and authorities accountable. Our support for the MSLT20 Cricket is also our way of encouraging young men and women to participate in sports as it builds self-esteem and instils discipline and leadership qualities. We believe that together with our partners and various stakeholders we can build a violence free society”.

In addition, CSA Commercial Manager, Ms Kugandrie Govender stated that "As a cricket community, we continue in making a stance against inequality and gender-based violence in all of our campaigns. This is the main reason why we stand behind our partners, the SABC, towards this initiative that aims to promote and build a sports loving South Africa."

The South African public can join the SABC across our multi-platforms and on social media using the following hashtags;

#TheseHandsDoNotCommitGBV  #OrangetheWorld  #GenerationEquality  #MSLT2O to voice their support during the 16 Days of Activism.
